Grammy-nominated Zooey Deschanel, the star and a producer of the Fox comedy New Girl, could soon be spending some time on Broadway in a role that might steer her on a course toward even greater notoriety. On Thursday night, country music legend Loretta Lynn announced from the stage of the Grand Ole Opry that she has personally selected Deschanel to star in her life story on Broadway. Wearing one of her signature long-sleeved, floor-length dresses, the Country Music Hall of Fame member announced plans for a musical adaptation of Coal Miner’s Daughter.
Coal Miner’s Daughter was a number one hit for Lynn in 1970 in which she wrote about growing up as one of eight children in rural Kentucky. It became the title of her 1976 autobiography and the basis for a 1980 movie, which traces Lynn’s rise from humble beginnings into one of country music’s most beloved singers.
In 1979, Lynn invited Sissy Spacek to the Opry stage to reveal that she would play her in an upcoming film. Spacek went on to win an Academy Award for her performance. In a very similar fashion, she announced Deschanel’s involvement in a possible Broadway production.
“I have a friend here tonight. I don’t know if ya’ll remember when Sissy Spacek was with me. I brought her out here with me. She about fainted. We both fainted. She went on to do the Coal Miner’s Daughter, and you know from there. Well, there’s a little girl backstage that’s going to do the play of Coal Miner’s Daughter on Broadway. Zooey, where you at, honey?” – Loretta Lynn, introducing Zooey Deschanel
Deschanel then joined her on stage, the two traded verses and they ended the song holding hands.
The stage adaptation is still in the beginning stages and workshop dates have not been announced. Producers are confident that the famous material, and Deschanel, will lead to success.
During Thursday’s suprise Opry duet, Deschanel is said to have sung her parts strongly and with a convincing lilt to her voice. As the music faded out, Lynn said to the crowd, “Don’t forget her name. Her name is Zooey.”
